2006 Summer Institute Materials Now Available!
The National Center on Student Progress Monitoring held its annual Summer Institute on Student Progress Monitoring on July 13-14 in Kansas City, Missouri. The PowerPoint presentations, handouts, and training manuals from all sessions are now available on our website. Whether or not you were able to attend the Summer Institute, you are sure to find the training material useful as you begin or continue to implement student progress monitoring in your state, district, building, or classroom! We encourage you to download and share these free materials with your colleagues.

Final IDEA Part B 2004 Regulations Released!
On August 3 the Department of Education Secretary, Margaret Spellings, announced the final regulations to implement Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA). These regulations take effort on October 13, 2006. To view the official copy of the final Part B regulations of the IDEA, published in the Federal Register, click here.

Looking for focused, easy to navigate information about IDEA 2004? The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) in the U.S. Department of Education has developed a new IDEA website, Building the Legacy: IDEA 2004. This site was created to provide a "one-stop shop" for resources related to IDEA and its implementing regulations. Currently, a series of topic briefs have been published that address “Major Topics” within the IDEA 2004. The topic brief, “ Identification of Specific Learning Disabilities” addresses the use of Response to Intervention (RTI) for learning disability identification.

Reading Interventions that Work!
When monitoring students’ progress in the classroom, teachers often find that they need to alter their method of instruction for some struggling students to support better understanding of the curriculum. Savvy Teacher’s Guide: Reading Interventions that Work, written by Jim Wright, creator of www.interventioncentral.org, provides research-based reading intervention techniques teachers can implement in their classrooms. Find methods for teaching academic strategies to students as well as techniques to promote error correction, improve reading fluency, and build text comprehension.

CASE Webinar on IDEA 2004 Regulations
The Council of Administrators of Special Education (CASE) hosted a webinar (web seminar) entitled, “IDEA 2004 Regulations: What’s New and Different?” on September 6 and will be hosting it again on September 19, 2006. Presenter Perry Zirkel, a leading legal advisor in special education law, will provide an analysis of the recently released IDEA Regulations. Join the webinar on September 19 th to learn more about the possible legal implications of these regulations for local directors.
