2006 Summer Institute on Student Progress Monitoring
Registration for the 2006 Summer Institute is now closed because we have reached full capacity. If you would like to be placed on our waiting list, please email us by Friday, June 9. As with our past Summer Institutes, we will be providing all of the manuals, handouts, and PowerPoints from this year's Institute online. As soon as these are available, we will feature them in The Progress Monitor.

If you have already registered for the 2006 Summer Institute but have not yet made your hotel reservations at the Kansas City Marriott Country Club Plaza, please do so before June 16. Please visit our Summer Institute Lodging page for details on how to receive our special conference rate.

Additionally, the deadline for the poster session has been extended to Friday, June 9. If you are registered for the Institute and have worked to establish student progress monitoring at the state, district, building, or classroom level, we hope you will consider participating in the poster session. NCLD’s New RTI Guide for Parents
Our partner, the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD), has recently created “A Parent’s Guide to Response-to-Intervention (RTI)” to explain how RTI and student progress monitoring can be used in schools to guide teachers’ instruction and help students who are struggling and those who may have learning disabilities. Written using accessible language, this guide explains the RTI process, offers sample case studies, and both addresses and poses questions parents should ask concerning the implementation of RTI in their districts. Our center also offers family-friendly resources that explain the usefulness of student progress monitoring in both English and Spanish on our website.

Effective Instructional Strategies in Reading
Student progress monitoring is a scientifically based practice used to assess student progress and inform instruction. However, improvement in student performance relies on teachers’ knowledge of how to change their instruction when they find that students are not adequately progressing. The Access Center has created a brief called “Components of an Effective Reading Program” that explains the five essential research based components of reading that should be integrated into effective reading programs. The National Center on Student Progress Monitoring, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), was established to meet the challenge of implementing effective student progress monitoring in order to improve academic instruction. Our mission is to provide technical assistance to states and districts and to disseminate information about student progress monitoring practices proven to work in different academic content areas in grades K-5.
