SESSION DESCRIPTIONS - learn more

Thursday, July 13, 2006
The first day of the Institute consists of the following full-day sessions:

  • Using Curriculum-Based Measurement to Determine Response to Intervention: In this session, an overview of Response to Intervention (RTI) will be provided. In addition, specifics about how to use Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) in reading and math will be explained for:
    • Identifying students in need of Tier 2 intervention,
    • Determining whether response to Tier 2 intervention is inadequate and therefore special education may be appropriate,
    • Applying CBM decision making in Tier 2 special education to formulate effective individual intervention plans, and
    • Determining whether Tier 3 special education response is sufficient to consider exiting special education.
  • Using Curriculum-Based Measurement for Progress Monitoring in Reading: This session will introduce you to student progress monitoring and explain its benefits to student achievement, as well as teach you specific CBM techniques in reading.
  • Using Curriculum-Based Measurement for Progress Monitoring in Math: This session will introduce you to student progress monitoring and explain its benefits to student achievement, as well as teach you specific CBM techniques in math.

The second day of the Institute consists of the following breakout sessions:

  • Introduction to Curriculum-Based Measurement in Reading
  • Introduction to Curriculum-Based Measurement in Math
  • Data-Based Instructional Decision Making
  • Supporting Teachers Who Are Implementing Student Progress Monitoring:
    A Guide for Administrators
  • Implementing Student Progress Monitoring on a Statewide Basis
  • Choosing a Progress Monitoring Tool that Works for You

POSTER SESSION AND RECEPTION - learn more

The 2006 Summer Institute on Student Progress Monitoring offers you the unique opportunity to share your own experiences and successes in implementing student progress monitoring with your colleagues. We will hold a poster session and reception following the training workshop on Thursday, July 13 that will enable you to describe how you have implemented student progress monitoring in your state, district, building, or classroom, as well as your lessons learned from this experience. Inspire and encourage others to begin implementing student progress monitoring by sharing both your successes and challenges.

The 2006 Summer Institute is intended for anyone interested in implementing student progress monitoring to improve achievement for students with disabilities and at-risk students. Participants may include:

  • State, district, and building administrators;
  • Special and general education teachers and service providers;
  • School psychologists;
  • Educational diagnosticians;
  • Professional development providers; and
  • Curriculum and instructional specialists.

While teams are not required to attend, we do encourage them. By attending the Institute as a team, you are able to cover more sessions and share your learning with one another. In addition, team attendance promotes unity and collaboration, which is critical when implementing student progress monitoring in a school or district. Registration for the 2006 Summer Institute is available online. People unable to register via the website should call us toll-free at (866) 770-6111. The registration deadline is June 16, 2006.  Participation is limited to 200 people, so register early!

photo: Kansas City Marriott Country Club Plaza The 2006 Summer Institute will be held at the Kansas City Marriott Country Club Plaza, which is located at 4445 Main Street, Kansas City, MO 64111. A block of rooms has been reserved at a special rate of $91 per night, plus tax. The deadline for making hotel reservations is June 16, 2006.

The National Center on Student Progress Monitoring, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), was established to meet the challenge of implementing effective student progress monitoring in order to improve academic instruction. Our mission is to provide technical assistance to states and districts and to disseminate information about student progress monitoring practices proven to work in different academic content areas in grades K-5.
