Center Presents at DC's SIG Conference
On August 6, 2008 the National Center on Student Progress Monitoring presented a full day workshop on “Using Curriculum-Based Measurement to Determine Response to Intervention” at the District of Columbia’s State Improvement Grant Summer Conference. Participants were introduced to CBM procedures in reading and mathematics and to a three-tiered RTI model. Participants learned how CBM can be used to identify students in need of more intensive interventions, monitor students’ progress in each tier, and make data-based decisions. This presentation was adapted from our previous Summer Institute presentation and materials, which can be found here.

U.S. Department of Education Announces States for Participation in Supplemental Educational Services (SES) Pilot
On August 4, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings announced that seven states --
Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, Utah and Virginia -- have permission to allow districts in their first year of improvement status to offer its students free tutoring (supplemental educational services) during the 2008-09 school year before allowing them to transfer to another school as part of the school choice option under No Child Left Behind.
According to the Department,
supplemental educational services are an important component of the law, giving low-income parents real options to obtain free tutoring and after-school services for their children. These seven states will also offer the school choice transfer option, either at the same time as SES, or in the second year of school improvement status along with SES.
