Accommodations: A list of DIBELS approved accommodations is available in the Administration and Scoring Guide (e.g., giving directions in the student’s primary language or sign language).

Students may respond using their strongest mode of communication. For example, the student may sign, use a word board, or compute to use a word or read a passage. The tester should make a professional judgment regarding the fluency of response. If the student’s fluency is affected by the accommodation, then the standard scoring interpretations (i.e., low risk) should not be applied.

The DIBELS–WUF assesses expressive language and vocabulary skills for students in grades K through 3.

Student performance is measured by having students use a word provided by an examiner in a phrase, expression, or utterance. As the student produces a response, the examiner counts the number of words by moving a pen through the row of numbers that’s provided on the scoring sheet. Item score is the number of words in correct utterances. Administration lasts one minute.

The tool provides information on student performance in English.

DIBELS–WUF takes 2 minutes per probe to administer to individual students.

30 alternate forms per grade are available for benchmark and progress monitoring.

Raw, percentile, and developmental benchmark scores are available.

Raw scores are calculated by adding the number of correct words in each correct utterance. Percentiles are provided using local norms.

Student below the 20th percentile are considered at-risk. Student between 20-40% are at some-risk. Students greater than 40% are at low-risk. Risk factors are established with local norms.
