Forms and materials can be downloaded and photocopied for free from the DIBELS website . |
Internet access is required for full use of product services. Testers will require 1-4 hours of training. Paraprofessionals can administer the test. Accommodations: A list of DIBELS approved accommodations is available in the Administration and Scoring Guide (e.g., giving directions in the student’s primary language or sign language). Alternate pictures of the target words may be used if the pictures that are more familiar to the student are available. The target word should not be changed. |
Dynamic Measurement Group, Inc. Palm Pilot version available at: Phone: 541-346-2145/2399 Field tested training manuals are available and should provide all implementation information. A web-based tutorial is included. Technical assistance is available at the DIBELS website. |
The DIBELS–ISF is a standardized, individually administered test of phonological awareness that assesses a child’s ability to recognize and produce the initial sound in an orally presented word for students in kindergarten. The examiner presents four pictures to the child, names each picture, and then asks the child to identify (i.e., point to or say) the picture that begins with the sound orally produced by the examiner. The child is also asked to orally produce the beginning sound for an orally presented word that matches one of the given pictures. The examiner calculates the amount of time taken to identify/produce the correct sound and converts the score into the number of initial sounds correct in a minute. The tool provides information on student performance in English. The test was normed using a national sample of 38,000 kindergarteners. |
DIBELS–ISF takes 2 minutes per probe (6 minutes per 3 probes) to administer to individual students. 22 alternate forms per grade are available for benchmark and progress monitoring. Raw, percentile, and developmental benchmark scores are available. Raw scores are calculated by adding the number of correct responses, multiplying by 60, and then dividing by the number of seconds it takes for a student to identify/produce the correct sounds. A composite score is provided along with instructional recommendations obtained by calculating the odds of achieving subsequent literacy outcomes from longitudinal research. Benchmark goals are based on the odds of achieving subsequent early literacy goals. Students are considered at grade level if they correctly produce/identify 8 initial sounds in one minute in the beginning of kindergarten. 3 consecutive assessments below the aimline are not making adequate progress. Adequate performance is reaching the benchmark goal of 25 correct initial sounds per minute by the middle of kindergarten. |
