Cost per student per year: $ 3.00 for year 1 and subsequent years. A minimum of $100 per user/teacher is required. Storage & Reporting Option: The probes themselves are free, but the $3 per student charge is for the data entry, tracking and report generation features of the site. |
Internet access is required for full use of product services. The reading probe materials are in pdf format and can be downloaded and printed. Student data may be entered online and is saved in a central database. Reports on student and class performance can be generated, viewed, and printed from the Internet. Testers will require 1-4 hours of training. Paraprofessionals can administer the test. Accommodations: The developer plans to have additional materials specific to students who are hearing impaired, who are currently using the Edcheckup Maze materials. |
Children’s Educational Services, Inc. and WebEdCo Field tested training manuals are available and should provide all implementation information. Ongoing technical support is available through e-mails and phone consultation. |
Edcheckup provides stimulus materials, administration and scoring procedures for screening, and progress monitoring in reading. The measure includes oral reading and maze passages, “isolated word” list and letter sound probes for students in kindergarten through grade 5 and above. The approach used is General Outcome Measurement based on the principles and procedure developed, initially, as Curriculum-based Measurement through the Institute for Research on Learning Disabilities at the University of Minnesota (1977-83). A substantial number of students whose first language is Hispanic or Hmong are included in the sample. |
The measure takes 3 minutes of administration time and 1-10 minutes of scoring time to administer to individual or group of students. 23 alternate forms are available. The probes, along with directions for their administration, are located on a website: http://www.edcheckup.com. Raw score and developmental benchmark scores are available. All scores are raw scores; and are counted as words or choices correct and incorrect within a time. Although specifying benchmarks is possible, one should cautious about it because of the relatively high standard errors of measurement (SEM) of all progress measures and the wide variety of state standards assessments. Maze: Adequate growth is specified as “Low-Medium-High” based on samples used in research that is both direct and indirect. Oral Reading: Slopes of growth rates are higher at earlier grade levels. At grade 1, growth rates approximately 2 words per week and 1.66 at grade 2. The annual slope declined with grade level with average growth rate being about .60 at grade 5 and 6. |
